Health Benefits of Green Tea

The touted myriad of health benefits derived from drinking green tea is not part of a longstanding marketing hype. Plenty of research has shown why you are doing yourself a favor by enjoying cup after cup of your favorite warm green tea. Here are five of them supporting the various health claims you hear about green tea.

Green Tea May Help Combat Common Eye Diseases Like Glaucoma

The paper, “Green Tea Catechins and Their Oxidative Protection in the Rat Eye,” which appeared in a 2010 issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, documents that the catechins in green tea absorbed into the tissues of the eyes and help protect them from glaucoma and other eye diseases. Also, the scientists found out that drinking green tea can help the eyes fight the harmful effects of oxidative stress for up to 20 hours.

Green Tea Compound Can Tackle Cancer

The results of laboratory tests performed at the Universities of Strathclyde and Glasgow delivered a green tea extract called epigallocatechin gallate directly to cancer tumors and found out that almost two-thirds of them had either been reduced in size or had disappeared within a month. And no side effect observed in normal tissues.

The caveat: traditional intravenous delivery will not enable the extract to penetrate the tumors.

Two types of skin cancer were tested. And 40 percent of both tumor types disappeared within a month of getting the extract. The results of the study detailed in the paper. “Antitumor activity of the tea polyphenol epigallocatechin-3-gallate encapsulated in targeted vesicles after intravenous administration,” published in a 2012 issue of Nanomedicine.

Green Tea May Promote Healthy Bones

Published in a 2009 issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. The paper, “Effects of Tea Catechins, Epigallocatechin, Gallocatechin, and Gallocatechin Gallate, on Bone Metabolism,” tells of certain bone-health-boosting chemicals found in tea. Those chemicals can stimulate the formation of bone, and also slowed down the breakdown of bone. Furthermore, the researchers involved in the study said that tea showed promise in preventing and treating bone diseases like osteoporosis.

Green Tea May Inhibit the Growth of Prostate Cancer Tumor

The study funded by the National Institutes of Health. And also presented at a global conference in cancer prevention research in October 2012. The findings of the study showed that men who had prostate cancer. And patients who had consumed six cups of green tea before they went under surgery had reduced inflammation? Inflammation one of the processes involved in the growth of prostate cancer tumor.

Green Tea Boosts Memory and Learning

According to the paper, “Green tea epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) promotes neural progenitor cell proliferation and sonic hedgehog pathway activation during adult hippocampal neurogenesis,” which was published in a 2012 issue of Molecular Nutrition & Food Research, green tea not only helps boost memory but also aid spatial learning by stimulating the production of brain cells. The researchers said that the EGCG in green tea could help fight certain degenerative diseases and also prevent memory loss.

So don’t give up your daily tea habit anytime. Make a cup of hot green tea and soothe yourself in the middle of a grueling workday. Or you can enjoy your favorite beverage along with a good book while relaxing on the weekend at home.
